The Nobel prizes are awarded

This week's blog focuses on the Nobel prizes. If you recall, a number of years ago we displayed a bulletin board filled with fun facts about Nobel and the various Nobel prizes. This year, you boys will use this space to collaborate about the Nobel prizes and decide how that information should be displayed on the bulletin board for your school mates to learn new information about these important prizes. See the official website, http://nobelprize.org/ for more information. Each of you will report on a prize and this year's recipient. First come, first served. Our president is a recipient this year. What prize did he receive and why? Are there Jewish/ Israeli recipients? Seek and you shall find out about these genii among us. I am anxious to read what you uncover about these men and women, individuals who, I hope, will serve to inspire you this year. You have until October 29 to blog! The bulletin board you create will be ready to display on November 2, 2009. Enjoy this "nobel" endeavor!

The Nobel Prize for chemistry this year was givin to Venkatraman Ramakrishnan from the United Kingdom, Thomas A. Steitz from the USA, and Ada E. Yonath from Israel, "for studies of the structure and function of the ribosome". For more info on what they discovered and why it was so important go to this link: http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/chemistry/laureates/2009/press.html

Remember, you need to find information about the prize, prize winner and other "noble" pieces of information that we can add to a bulletin board. You should blog about the prize and person. This willbecome the basis of something that can be displayed on the bulletin board- facts, pictures, information, notable biographies. This is all completed by Friday, October 30, 2009.

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine went three people Elizabeth H. Blackburn, Carol W. Greider, and Jack W. Szostak. "for the discovery of how chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the enzyme telomerase"

The Nobel Prize in Physics went to three people. half of the prize went to Charles K. Kao, a forth of the prize to willards S. Boyle, and another fourth of the prize to George E. Smith. Charles recieved this award (1/2) for "groundbreaking achievments concerning the transmition of light in fibers for optical comunication". Willards, and Geroge, for "the invention of an imaging semiconducter circuit - the CCD sensor" all three of these important people had interviews after recieveing these noble prize. As i was scimming through there discussions i was not surprise at all. For example, Charles K. Kao, starts the discussions by talking about his interest in optical communication, and the different creative proccesses he went to with this optical communication breakthrough, adn same for the other two. we, see that these people really diserve this prize and thats because they got the prize for something they had a great interest in and with that the got very high, winning the Nobel Prize for Physics of 09'. I feel like this could be possible for anyone if someone has a great interest in Physics, Chemistry, medicine etc. all it takes is after having that great interest is just to go all at it. we can learn that about anything: To do well in school, be a starter on the basketball team, be what you're dreaming of becoming, and the list goes on forever. all it takes is just your will and you can get there.

Wow, Daniel, you really reflected on the significance of the Nobel Prizes! How will their discoveries impact our lives?

Ilya, what do you already know about chromosomes? DId you ask Mr. Vaughn or Mrs. George if they know about these discoveries?

Yaakov, Mr. Obama received the prize. Can you identify what the voting committee used as evidence that he "strengthened international diplomacy?"

David, where are ribosomes found? How might this discovery impact future science classes?

"Ribosomes are found in the cytoplasm of both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, as well as in the matrix of mitochondria and the stroma of chloroplasts. In eukaryotic cytoplasm, ribosomes are found in the cystol, and are bound to the endoplasmic reticulum as well as the outer membrane of the nuclear envelope."

the source for this is; http://www.answers.com/topic/where-are-ribosomes-found-in-a-cell

In answer to the second answer this discovery will impact future science classes, heres a piece of a article I found:

"The key to life at the atomic level
At the beginning of the twentieth century, the chemical foundations for life were a mystery. Today
we know how many of the most important processes function, all the way down to the atomic level.
The 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry is awarded for the detailed mapping of the ribosome – the cell’s
own protein factory. The ribosome translates the passive DNA information into form and function."

Hello my fellow class mates! Long time no talk! Today I will share with you two great Americans that got the Nobel Prize award. The first person is a lady named Elinor Ostrom from Indiana University. She share this award with Olliver E. williamson for analysis of economic governance. She is the first women to ever win this award. The reason why they both got this award was for common pool resources. It is man made resources, which is often expensive, and the problem of over usage which she helped try to stop. Water, Forests, fishing places, oil refineries are just some of the many types of common pool resources. These are the types of people that will help save America from having less gas, oil, and water which are all types of things humans need to survive on.
